A quiet Sunday morning

Frozen nuts, black lycra and a Cornish Pasty, all in the same morning...

Now, normally at a bike race I'd be one of the silly buggers dancing around in slinky, skinny lycra and ludicrously expensive sports glasses while trying to stay upright as {even more ludicrously expensive} carbon-soled shoes skate around on the polished indoor floors of a race HQ... But there's a first time for everything and as I know my system is still a bit fragile to subject it to a morning of leg & lung searing torture (it's fun really) I volunteered my services as a race marshal. Suffice to say that from now on I shall regard those guys standing around on windswept junctions in their hi-viz over-vests with a whole new respect... I froze my nuts off! One rider was clearly so grateful for my traffic control services he tossed me his £150 sun glasses as he ripped past... they were dripping wet when I picked them up, I took no notice as I wiped them on my sleeve... but then realised the grass wasn't wet... yuck, cheers Stuart..... I saw him back at race HQ when he came after me for the return of his sunnies.... I didn't wind him up too much, he looked knackered! Despite the cold and other folk's sweat it was worth it just to catch up with old faces at what was for many the first race of the season... and then of course there's all the Cornish pasties, tea and cake afterwards though I struggled to justify indulging having not ridden... well, for a few moments anyway, the pasties were damn good (courtesy of the local pasty shop ). If anything it's harder to watch than it is to take part - and today's event is always one of the more brutal ones on the calendar (well, if you ride it properly it is). Just being around bikes, racing, funny shaped aero helmets... and blokes in lycra... (hehe, I'm winding you up..) is enough to turn the competitive flame within me into a raging inferno... especially with a rich prize list on offer.

I should say a word about me and lycra... in case you're wondering... I'm having you on really... yes it's comfy on the bike, yes, there's nothing quite like the sheen of the black stuff as it moulds itself around sculpted muscles (ooerr, hehehe) but in case you're wondering whose camp (unfortunate word...!) I'm in... I recently watched Brokeback Mountain..... I felt dirty. :o)

HQ today was in a primary school, I enjoyed looking at all the children's artwork and projects pinned to the wall... took me back a few years, life was simple then... ahhh! I never get the same feeling visiting secondary or comprehensive schools - life can start to suck when you get past 11 years old... things like homework, Nazi PE teachers and school bullies all conspire to make later schooling years a miserable experience. Give me crayons and picture books any day....

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've been up since 5am so I'm off for a few Z's.
cheerio!
