The attraction of scabby old things...
No, I'm not talking about aging screen
sex-gods.....
Something of a thought out of the blue today,
I was pondering my lack of photographic inspiration in Cornwall..... most folk
are horrified when I say that, imagining a land of sweeping seascapes,
sun-kissed beaches and lush valleys all home to quaint old cottages and pretty
little fishing villages... well, yes Cornwall is like that I suppose (when it
stops raining) but it's so..... boring. There's no grittiness to it, heck - you
want a pretty picture - go buy a postcard, there's plenty around. Yes I'm lucky
to live here... but I really have to hunt for the 'edge' that I like in my
pictures... I can't explain it but I'm so attracted to the scabby edges of a
place, the bits with interesting textures, corrosion stains and and fading
colours. Funny really for an engineer, I'm supposed to appreciate hi-tech, shiny
new things that work perfectly....
Anyway, I digress - the only real reason
for this post is that for months I've had a couple of boxes of miscellaneous
slides sitting at the back of my desk, I'd never bothered filing them and had
completely forgotten what was in them. So today, lacking the inspiration to do
anything constructive I decided to take a look.... There are a couple here that
I really like. The first one is just an old bucket... an old bucket that was on
the back of council truck I walked past last summer. There's something about the
monochrome nature of the scene (it's a colour slide) with a metallic highlights
reflecting from the areas where paint has worn away. The second image is just up
by the bus station here in Camborne... just a couple of bits of board nailed
over what was once a window, the graffiti isn't even artistic but taken out of
context in the photo it's great. Can't explain it, it means nothing... just
enjoy it (or not, you may hate it....).
