The Super Vision of Julius Schwartz

Welcome!

This site is a supplement to the obituary for DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz that I wrote for The Comics Journal #259, April 2004.

On the following pages, I have assembled a large selection of covers of comic books, fanzines, and other publications that Julie edited or was associated with. I've got photos and videos for you, too. They are organized by year.

On each page, (including this one) you can click on a thumbnail to open a new window and view a larger-sized version of an image. But I think you'll enjoy it more if you click on the "Start Slideshow" icon to view the whole year. The covers take on extra meaning when viewed in the context of what else Julie was doing at that time. At any time during the slideshow you can click on an image to see it full size.

You'll also be rewarded if you look for themes. DC's gorilla theme is the most famous, but keep an eye out for recurring images of diamonds, hands and fingers, and -- well, see what you can discover.

Thanks to Peter Bickford of Human Computing, we've got a couple of video clips of Julie talking about Showcase and Green Lantern.

Strange Schwartz Story: On March 18, 2004, as Julie Schwartz's friends and family gathered for his memorial service in New York City, two highly unusual events made the news. First, an asteroid passed within 26,500 miles of the Earth, far inside the orbit of the moon and just a whisker above the geostationary orbit of the Justice League satellite (22,300 miles). Second, a gorilla escaped from the Dallas zoo. Coincidence? You decide.

Very special thanks to Bob Bailey, Marc Svensson, Robert Beerbohm, Bob Hughes, and Arthur Lortie for the scans and photographs they provided. Thanks also to David Bachman, Jerry Bails, Will Murray, and members of the Grand Comics Database project (www.comics.org) for the invaluable research and guidance they provided for the article.

If you don't see your favorite Julius Schwartz cover here and you would like to contribute a scan of it, email me. I'm still developing the site and still accepting contributions. Julie edited a lot of westerns in the 1950s and early '60s. They're not well-represented here, so if you've got scans of some of those issues, we'd really appreciate your sharing them with us. I'd especially like to finish out Julie's Showcase and Brave and Bold issues. To that end, I'm looking for scans of Showcase #8, 23, 55, and 61. Also Brave and Bold 28, 30, 35, 36, 42, 43, 44, 45, and 46. Also Flash 105-109. And any Golden Age comics that Julie worked on (essentially any issue of All-American Comics, All-Flash, Comic Cavalcade, Flash, and Green Lantern from about mid-1944 forward).
