the Suzuki Method
The Suzuki Method grew out of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki's observation that all children learned their native language with ease. He reasoned that music could be learned in much the same way, and developed a method of instruction that parallels language acquisition: children learn first by hearing, then playing; they learn to read somewhat later, after they have gained some mastery of their instrument.
Suzuki instruction requires a dynamic partnership among, child, parent, and teacher. One parent attends each lesson, then serves as a home teacher during practice sessions for her or his child.
In developing Suzuki Piano Plus, Dr. Campbell has taken Dr. Suzuki's mother-tongue approach as a mandate. Accordingly, the curriculum includes activities that nurture students' ability to "talk music," that is, create original musical statements as if conversing. This in turn benefits all musical learning.
