"FREUDIAN SLIP" is not actually about a Freudian slip, of course. Its tag is too far off - and that is (hopefully) where the humor lies. Shot on 16mm Arriflex non-sync'd (no sound) cameras using black & white reversal (negative) film stock. Filmed in November 2002 on the "Jurassic Park III" Ingen lab set @ Universal Studios, California.
We were originally assigned to the set of "The Hulk" (actually just a neighborhood set) which suited my story. Then we were switched at the last minute to the barren JP set. I really needed a house for at least one shot, and we couldn't roam about to sets other than where we were assigned. For example, security was guarding the "Bruce Almighty" set. Even though Jim Carrey wasn't there that day, they did film with some extras.
At any rate, I managed to get a shot of a house that was on an adjacent lot - quite a famous (or an infamous) house, as it turns out!
"IWO JIMA" was never intended to be anything more that a series of 35mm still black & whites when taken near Arlington, VA, September, 2002.
One weekend our class ran out of time when shooting the final short of an assignment on black & white (mine) So that I would have something to edit the next week, I decided to make a film of still photos and, although I could have converted color pics to black & white, these shots came to mind.
What I would really like to do one day to complete this short is to go back and film the statue closeup with a DV or movie camera, then slowly zoom out in freeze frame that then converts to live action, depicting the tourists etc gathered at the base of the monument. At the same time, the film would gradually turn from B&W to color (this would replace the color slide I created in the original, as kind of an uplifting conclusion)
Although not evident in my pics, this edifice is huge, approx 80 feet (24.3 meters) from the base of the pedestal to the tip of flagpole - the largest brass statue in the world.
"HUMMER" was filmed on location at Park Place, Irvine, where I currently work - and where "Demolition Man" was shot, in part.
Filmed in January, 2003. Originally filmed using 16mm black & white reversal film stock, I encountered technical difficulties during filming. To complete the editing, I reverted to the color digital video that I (fortunately) also shot.
There were only three persons - all male - on hand that day in Irvine: Myself, another student, the third being the owner of the Hummer H2 that appears in the short.
To complete the short, inserts were shot at a later time, including one featuring a female student in the New York Film Academy's van, filmed on Universal's European set.
A wide shot showing both vehicles required that myself and the other male student on hand start the two cameras, then run and assume positions in the respective vehicles' driver seats. Black tape was stuck over the camera viewfinders to block unwanted light.
Also during the wide shot, the Hummer owner - a man sporting a mustache and standing six feet, three inches (190.5 centimeters) tall - was hunched down in the passenger seat of the H2, wearing a pulled down baseball cap. In other words, he briefly 'played' the female in the wide shot that day in Irvine!
