Danjel Andreasson, Kristina's mother's brother, is relatively rich and owns his own farm -"Kärragärde".
One night he had a vision, and he decided to change his lifestyle and follow the teachings of the heretical Åkian sect. He became very religious and leads a little group of Parish outcasts (including the former town-whore … Ulrika).
In a time when the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church is all-powerful, and has strong links with the Crown and the Law, he stands up against the local Parish Dean.

Kristina’s uncle Danjel has a prayer meeting around a makeshift altar at his house. The meeting is interrupted by the Dean, the Police and Parish Churchwardens. Danjel is forbidden to have more meetings, and to follow his vocation, and his little group is disbanded by Dean Brusander.
The little group of Danjel’s followers also wants to go to America.
