After the drought and crop failure came winter and famine. Children of the district are begging at kitchen doors, the sheriff is evicting the poor. Karl Oscar has seen a photo of America's boundless wheatfields in the churchwarden's newspaper.

Kristina struggles to feed her young family (which now is larger since the birth of Harald), the rye flour is running out and she is making 'Famine Bread' from chaff, beechnuts, heather-seeds and wild berries … still she hopes for better times.

KRISTINA:

Amerika…

(America…)

Där skulle aldrig jag förstå ett ord av vad dom säger

(There I would never understand a word of what they're saying)

Jag skulle irra runt som bortbytt, främmande och vilse

(I would wander about so lost and feeling like a stranger)

Har du aldrig tänkt på hur förtvivlat ensamt livet skulle bli

(Have you never thought of how despairing and how lonely life would be?)

Och har du tänkt på om man flyttar så långt bort i världen

(And have you thought that if one moves so far away in the world)

Då kan man aldrig komma hem igen, då får man aldrig

Se föräldrar, syskon, vänner mer.

KARL OSCAR:

Utan ände låg veteäkern jag såg på bild

(Without end lay, acres of wheat there, I've seen pictures)

KRISTINA:

Visst kan det hända vi får svälta lite nu i vinter

(Certainly it can happen that we starve like now in winter)

Men nästa år blir säkert bättre, vi får äta upp oss då

(But next year will surely be better, we will eat our fill then)

Och under tiden ska vi säkert klara oss på något sätt

(And in the meantime it's clear we will certainly manage in some way)

KRISTINA OCH FÖRÄLDRARNA: (Kristina and her parents:)

Och har du tänkt på om man flyttar så långt bort i världen

(You lose them all at the same time)

Kristina has made Christening Porridge for little Harald from some barley she had hidden just for this day. It was to be a real feast for the family, during this time of starvation. Anna, in her hunger, is unable to resist stealing it for herself, and has eaten it all. Completely gorged, her little stomach bursts, and she dies a slow and painful death.

Kristina experiences eternal darkness—she must get away, she must find a way to save her other children. The death of Anna is the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Although she's afraid to emigrate, she gives up her hesitations…

Anna föråt sig på korngrynsgröten. Den svällde i den lillas mage. [Anna overindulges herself with the porridge. It swells in her little stomach.] Efter vinterns nödföda var gröten för stark kost. [After a winter of famine it is too heavy a food for her.] Tidigt på morgonen dog hon i sina plågor. [Early in the morning she dies in pain] BEGRAVNINGSGÄSTER: (Funeral guests:)

(Come to me all you, all you who hunger)

Alla som fryser, kommen till mig

(All who are freezing, come unto me)

Jag skall er föda, Jag skall er kläda

(I shall then feed you, I shall then clothe you)

Er vederkvicka, kom till mig alla

(There you'll be refreshed, come to me all you)

Från andra sidan Oceanen, sändes en maning:

(From the other side of, the ocean, they send a message:)

Vi har jorden som ni saknar

(We have the earth that you're lacking)

Och ni har mänskorna vi behöver

(And you have the people that we need here)

Här finns en fristad åt alla

(Here exists a sanctuary for all)

(Come to me all you, all you who hunger, All who are freezing, come unto me)

Enstaka droppar blir till strömmar, mäktig är floden

(Separate drops they become a stream, mighty is the flood)

Det förs ett bud från granne till granne

(There is a command from neighbour to neighbour)

Ett bud som sprids i landskap och län

(It spreads in provinces and lands)

Ett frö som gror i mänskornas och som växer där.

(A seed which sprouts in mankind's soul and grows strong there.)
