The next stage of the journey is across country and dangers are ever present. The immigrants are petrified of the new forms of transport. They sit in silence on their belongings, they pray… too scared even to open the windows at first.
They glimpse silent, staring, threatening Indians on the plains. At one stage, Karl Oscar gets mugged; at another, they almost leave Lill-Märta behind - but she is rescued by Ulrika. Kristina has to admit to herself that maybe she was wrong to despise her so…

2.7 FRÅN NEW YORK TILL STILLWATER (From New York To Stillwater) 1:30

Och invandrarnas färd går vidare inåt Nordamerika.
[And the immigrants go deeper into North America]
Med flodbåt, ångvagn och hjulångare.
[By flat-bottomed riverboat, steamtrain, and paddlesteamer]

DANJEL:

Gud visar vägen på vår färd i natt

(God shows the way on our journey tonight)

Tusen eldar har han låtit tända

(Thousand fires in the sky He’s lighting)

Hemlandet är oändligt fjärran nu

(Homeland is endlessly far away now)

Ändå är vår resa en till ända.

(And our journey is not at its ending)

Gud har skapat jorden så

(God has shaped too big this land)

För stor för människan att förstå

(For His poor children to understand)

Ett vet jag skert, till vårt fosterland

(One thing I know is, to our home country)

Ska vi aldrig mera återvända

(Shall we never ever be returning)
