The "Astrakan" appletree still stands. Frosts have killed the blossoms each time the tree has bloomed for the last three years. Now, in it's fourth year, it is laden with fruit.
Kristina lost too much blood from yet another misscarriage and has lapsed into a coma. Only Karl Oscar and her are left at 'Nya Duvemåla' . The warring Sioux are fast approaching from the west, and the children are hiding with other settlers on Cedar Island out in the lake Ki-Chi-Saga.

3.18 I GOTT BEVAR (In Good Keeping) 7:08

Han är den ede nybyggaren i St. Croixdalen,
[He is the last settler in the St. Croix Valley,]
Som har stannat kvar i sett hem.

Han ska vaka över sin hustru
[He shall watch over his wife]

Hon jämrar sig sakta i sin dvala.
[She murmurs quietly in her fever.]
När han lutar sig över henne ser han i hennes ögon att
[When he leans over her he sees in her eyes that]
Hon åter känner igen honom.
[She recognises him again.]
För första gången på tre dygn känner hon igen honom.
[It's the first time in three days she recognises him.]

KRISTINA:

En gång var jag rädd för mörkret, men det är jag inte mer

Dagar, nätter, det gör ingen skillnad, jag är trygg,vad som än sker

(Daytime, night-time, it just makes no difference, I am safe, of that I'm sure)
