Research: “Mrs. Stack, who was 75 years old, had not been feeling well and lay down on the sofa in the kitchen, and her husband lay on his bed in a room off the kitchen. In the house lived besides the couple their son David and wife. The elder Stack hearing, as he said, steps in his room seized a revolver, and seeing a man standing in the doorway leading to the backyard, fired twice at him, but apparently without effect. The door had been left unfastened, and the burglar gained admission thereby. The noise of the firing brought many people to the scene. Mrs. Stack was found lying on the lounge with blood running from a gash over the right eye. She hardly regained consciousness until the hour of her death. It is thought Mrs. Stack must have recognized her assailant and that he then choked and beat her to quiet her. Young Stack said the murderer must have been familiar with the house and habits of the family. He said his father sold a house for $1,600 a short time ago, paid off a mortgage, and deposited the rest, $1,000. There was but $25 in the house, which was secured by the burgular. There have been many theories in explanation of the tragedy, and an inquest was begun Monday.” Portland Transcript Jan. 1888
