What is Exploring Computer Applications?

An exploratory course designed to provide an investigation of the types of activities performed with computers and through laboratory experiences students explore the skills and technologies of this industry. Content includes the application of technology; the design of products and services; emerging and innovative technologies, safety and maintenance of technology; marketing; technology related career explorations; and codes, laws, and standards. Activities may include desktop publishing, computer-aided design and drafting, computer animation, HTML programming, LOGO programming,  CNC programming, computer, control, and robotics. Exploring Computer Technology will result in the activity of designing, constructing, taking apart, putting together, and programming computers. (A semester course)  

What skills will students be developing during the course?

Students will learn

  1. to use various applications software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Photoshop Elements, iMovie, Final Cut Pro Express, Adobe Premier, Web Page Design, Bryce, Garage Band, Poser, CAD, LOGO Programming, etc.
  2. to do rudimentary HTML programming, post to a Blog site, and develop an article and post on a wiki.
  3. to design and maintain a website on Think.com with their new letter posted to it.
  4. about the various parts and systems that make up the hardware of the computer, i.e. CPU, input devices, output devices, electronic components, integrated circuits, microchip, storage devices, RAM, ROM, etc.
  5. about the history of computing.
  6. about binary and hexadecimal numbers.
  7. to repair, design, troubleshoot, take apart, put back together, and test computer systems to see how they operate.
  8. about programming applications and languages that give instructions to computer hardware that allows the computer to effectively function.
  9. work as part of a team in developing some class work and projects.
  10. write a newsletter or brochure related to computer technology and applications.
  11. to follow safety procedures when working with electronic components.
  12. the various industry codes and laws that are used for computer safety, copyright, etc. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Electrical Code (NEC), American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), copyright, and software piracy.
  13. about emerging and innovative technologies related to the computer industry.

How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed in a variety of methods; the units are internally assessed through coursework that involves students producing individual and group projects, working on class activities, designing computer systems, and internet sites, and taking online quizzes and examinations.
