John Hotchkis/Jim Adams | Starter kit

Notes: I've gotten tired of building old Starter kits. Not that the kit parts are bad. They are simple, usually, nice kits to build. Sometimes too simple compared to modern standards. The part that started to get on my nerves with Starter kits was spending all this time building and painting only to run into decals that would shatter when applied. I couldn't use enough decal saver stuff to make them work unless it was a small decal. So almost all of my old Starter kits are gone from my to build collection.

But I missed this kit originally, so I took a chance with this one. My strategy was to scan the decals and print my own set before I ever set out to waste my time trying the originals first. I wasn't going to redraw the art, just scan and print hoping I got a good color match. You can tell the difference, but that still worked fine. I printed on white decal paper. It worked out for the larger areas. I still ended up using the kit decals for the smaller sponsors.

This kit had a bottle of paint included since the color was considered hard to match. Turns out a bottle of paint doesn't last 20 years. It was solid. Did look nice through the glass though. Did help to match the color I would need to paint too. I used Tamiya acrylic. Looked just right to me with no adjustments. This is a really simple kit with few parts. Other than having to work out the decal issues, its an easy set of parts to build. Castings are clean and fit without any problems. I added some photo-etched grills for the radiators instead of painting them. Other than that, the rest is what Starter provided.
