Are you ‘stuck in a rut’ with your look or the clothes you wear? Are you still wearing the lipstick you wore in your 20s?
If the answer is ‘yes’ you now have the opportunity to change how you look and how you feel about yourself, all in a matter of a few hours.
Admittedly there are other make-over places around London, but from experience the process is rushed; certainly none take as much time to give an honest, personal and committed evaluation as do Valentino in Thackeray Street. They refer to the make-over as the art of presence – I think the The Valentino Experience might be more apt.
The process starts when you fill in a short questionnaire so Valentino understands how you perceive yourself, and how you want others to perceive you. The final look you have at the end of the day is based on whether you want to look business like, conservative, funky, bohemian, elegant, romantic, dramatic or theatrical.
With a team of six working on my eyebrows (tinted and shaped), paraffin wax for dry hands, manicure and hair cut, I was then tested for my ‘colours’ for years thinking they go well with their skin tone but actually are completely wrong? Here you will be told exactly which colours and textures of clothing will best suit your skin tone. Next came the preparation for the make-up session and anyone with allergies need not worry since Valentino’s use Dermalogica products.

Using my ‘colours’ to govern the colour and tone of the make-up used, and together with the new look eye brows and switch over of parting, the effect was to ‘open out’ my face and lengthen my neck. The salon faces north and south so you get an idea of what you look like in both bright and dull light. Whilst I was there two other girls were being made up. Both girls looked ‘normal’ - nothing scarily model-like about them; however after the few hours of consultation, tweaking here and there and wearing clothes suited to their body shape, both were completely transformed, noticeably more confident and looked terrific.
Perhaps the highlight of the day is the photographic session. Of the three of us, none professed to being comfortable in front of the camera, but the other two instantly turned into models and definitely worthy of a Vogue front cover. As part of this package you will receive an 8” x 10” photograph plus a CD of your images taken that day.
The Valentino Make Over Experience is not cheap, but then looking good never is. However, it does save years of wondering what colours suit you, how you should really wear your hair, and gives you confidence that no amount of money can buy. This is fantastic as a gift, or for that special occasion, a hen party, a wedding, an important interview or presentation. Not only is it fun, but the advice you are given will last a lifetime.
