'Sacred to the Memory': Scene 1, Take 1.5

After finally posting the first five pages of "Sacred to the Memory" on this site last month, I had the immediate realization that the first page was really crowded relative to the others.

Scott Allie agreed.

Thanks to some additional drawing and cross-hatching (and the miracle of Photoshop), page 1 is now pages 1 and 2. Art is now breathing much easier. Here's a preview.

'Sacred to the Memory': Scene 1, Take 1

Now this is exciting: Here's a preview of the first five pages of "Sacred to the Memory" -- my long-gestating collaboration with Scott Allie.

"Sacred" is a 60-page comic book about author and opium-sot Thomas De Quincey. Mr. Allie -- who edits "Hellboy" and other comics over at Dark Horse -- wrote the script, and he's been insanely patient while I finally get around to drawing the damned thing. (I got off to a good start months and months ago, but was waylaid by sudden lurches into CulturePulp and film criticism.)

Scene 1 concerns our "hero" having a waking fever dream about his dead sister. For the moment, I'm fairly happy with the artwork -- up to and including the image of a little boy kissing his encephalitic dead sibling -- but will undoubtedly have to re-draw the whole thing from scratch after I finish the other 50-odd pages. (Also, my lettering font will probably be replaced by the chicken scratches of a real live human at some point.)

Still reading? There are two ways to take a gander:

(1) The fast way: Click this "Read More" link (or the one below) to read it online.

(2) The slow way: Download this ridiculously large (but also ridiculously hi-rez) PDF: Sacred.1thru5.pdf

SNEAK PEEK: "Sacred to the Memory"

Pasted below is a panel from "Sacred to the Memory," my long-gestating collaboration with Scott Allie:

As scripted by Scott, "Sacred" is a 60-page graphic novel about the life of Thomas De Quincey , the noted author and opium-sot. For whatever reason, Mr. Allie -- who edits "Hellboy" and other excellent comics over at Dark Horse -- seems to think his wonderful, Gothic, passionately overheated script is well-suited to my Gorey-by-way-of-Fisher-Price stylings, and I couldn't be more flattered.

The book will be finished, well, when it's finished -- I'm guessing no sooner than a year from now. If you're curious, you can download a sample page (that's, like, six panels) from "Sacred to the Memory" (in PDF format) right here: SacredPage03.300.pdf
