ENDNOTES and DIGRESSIONS:

1. Gallagher has an official Web site, aptly named GallagherSmash.com. It's home to videos, "Gallagear" (which includes a collection of men's boxer briefs turned into women's shirts), fan mail and a cartoon of Gallagher rendered as Leonardo Da Vinci.

2. One of the most interesting things on the site is a little subsection devoted to complaints about Gallagher's last-place rating on Comedy Central's list of the "100 Greatest Stand-Ups." Careful Oregonian readers will, of course, remember Gallagher's memorable ranting about this very subject in last Saturday's O -- he said his 100th-place ranking "stunk," but only said this after appraising Michael Keaton's stand-up as "terrible," David Letterman's as "terrible," Tom Hanks' as "terrible," and, just to mix it up, Jim Carrey's as "embarrassing" and Robin Williams' as "C-level" (and, to hear Gallagher tell it, full of stolen jokes).

3. There's also a fascinating footnote in the story of Gallagher's younger brother Ron -- who for a period in the '90s did a copycat act where he performed much of the same material and billed himself as "Gallagher 2, The Living Sequel." In the FAQ section of GallagherSmash.com, this intriguing saga is addressed, in its entirety, as follows: "[Ron] used to do an impersonation of Gallagher but is no longer allowed to."
