CulturePulp 018: Storm Large's 7 Deadly Sins

Words, pix by M.E. Russell; shades by Chris Hanel.

Endnotes and Digressions:

1. As you may have gathered by now, there was a lot of banter, things done with microphone stands and general foul-mouthedness during this show that I simply couldn't convey in a family newspaper. Most of it was hilarious; I am now simultaneously afraid of and titillated by Storm Large -- which is, of course, exactly as she’d have it. As she beautifully puts it in one of her rock songs, “Thank God”: “Just about everything about me / screams that I’m the anti-debutante.”

2. Audience report: The crowd skewed 30-ish — lots of sweaters and cool clothes and smart Amelie haircuts and that body-softness that suggests the light debauchery of your 20s is starting to catch up with you. Also a fellow in a baseball cap and sweats.

3. If you’d like to see this filthy cabaret for yourself, Storm and the Balls will play the Portland Spirit again Friday, Dec. 17. Boarding starts around 10:30 p.m.; for ticket prices or more information call 503-224-3900.

4. Would you like to know more? Ms. Large maintains a comprehensive Web presence over at StormLarge.com — complete with mp3s and live bootlegs, videos, a message board and even some dirty-cheesecake photos of Storm by Kristin Gerbert and Portland’s own Marne Lucas. (Warning: only the live-bootleg mp3s really capture the loose, salty, anarchic spirit of her cabaret performances.)
