CulturePulp 023: Shopping with Daria
Endnotes and Digressions:
1.
This comic has online bonus features! As
mentioned, I did conduct a lengthy interview with O’Neill -- about
radio, comics, writing, scandal, family, fans, theater and the aforementioned
sexual mythologizing. You can read it (and see a couple of my better reference
photos) by clicking here.2.
Daria pointed out a fun little quirk of both Green Noise
Records and Xtabay: The proprietors of both stores tend to
affix tags and stickers with handwritten commentary to their merchandise. One
frock at Xtabay sported a tag that read, “One must seriously try this on
to realize the magnitude of this dress.”
(Jeffrey of Glamour
Gallery struck me as being sort of the living incarnation of these
sorts of stickers.)3.
“Bad Dates” continues through this
Saturday at Theater! Theater! (3430 S.E. Belmont St.). Ms. O’Neill plays a
lonely, thirtysomething restaurateur and single mother who riffs on her horrible
encounters with men -- all while sorting shoes and changing outfits in her
boudoir for an hour and 20 minutes. It’s a surprisingly intimate show,
punctuated by some extremely funny gapes of horror, and it’s well worth a
look. For tickets or more information visit www.TriPro.org.Lettering
