Endnotes and Digressions:

1. We were looking for boletes (better-known in overpriced restaurants as porcini) and chanterelle mushrooms; we didn’t find much of the latter.

2. We were not looking for matsutake mushrooms -- the variety that famously inspired Gold Rush-style, pistol-packing rivalries in the 1990s. As chronicled in some recent Oregonian articles, matsutake hunters have suffered in the wake of the same mushroom glut that was so wonderful for us that Sunday. Harvesters who used to make $1,000 a day are making a 40th of that now, and it’s just super-bad juju all around — though of course it’s also good news for buyers and amateur hunters like my in-laws.
