Lectures & Workshops (Email Us for Many More Choices!)

Unless otherwise specified, lectures are for all levels of experience, and are approximately one hour in length.

NOTHING UP MY HANGING SLEEVE
Unusual and entertaining insider tips and tricks from “The Fudgemaster’s” thirty years of quiltmaking experience. Includes topics such as “Alternative Shopping,” “Other Uses for 505 Spray,” and “Things My Grandmother Taught Me.” Includes a few samples to pass around and examine.
ANTIQUE QUILTATHON
All “show & tell” of the audience’s quilts* with lots of historical information sprinkled throughout. (*I will also bring some of my own antique quilts to fill in if needed.)
QUIVIAL PURSUIT
Trivia questions related to quiltmaking and quilt history. Contestants redeem point coupons for “fabulous” prizes! Hosted by a famous unknown quilter. Note: This program requires an additional $50 to cover prizes, OR the guild must provide prizes of various value - anything from a card of buttons to books, to yards of fabric; humorous prizes are expected as well.
MEMORY QUILTS
Explore various techniques which may be used to make a unique quilt to commemorate almost any occasion. Includes methods and reviews of some products for doing photo transfers, plus a few other simple ways to embellish and personalize your project. Merry will also provide some pointers on organizing a group quilt, and discuss the new Quilted Post Cards.
GRIDDED GEESE© TRUNK SHOW - Take a gander at some of the quilts Merry has made with this revolutionary product which enables you to mass-produce those pesky flying geese units! Merry will then walk you through the process of making Gridded Geese, and will bring a supply for you to purchase, if you wish.

WORKSHOPS:
FLYING GEESE TABLE RUNNER (Half-day) - Advanced Beginner - Make a beautiful seasonal table runner while learning how to operate the GRIDDED GEESE© system to produce a dozen perfect flying geese units (no kidding!)
RAGS TO RICHES: The Scrap Quilt (Full day) Advanced Beginner & up - Our first item of business will be a fabric swap of 4” squares, so everyone will have a wide variety of fabrics to work with (sounds good so far, eh?). Next, you’ll learn how to “make order out of chaos” as you sort your squares by value, and then explore several ways to combine them into an easy, scrappy block pattern. You’ll wonder why you never tried making a scrap quilt before!
HAND PIECING 101 (Half-day) All Levels - Got scraps?? Turn them into a hand-piecing project that you can work on almost anywhere. If you have been thinking about trying hand piecing, don’t miss this class!
LOCKER HOOKING (Half-day) All Levels - Start making a small hot pad for your table out of some of those old ugly fabrics in your stash (you can’t hide them from us!!). A special tool called a locker hook makes it possible. Kit: $9, includes locker hook, string and canvas; cotton fabric required.
MACHINE QUILT AS YOU GO (Full day) Advanced Beginner - Wouldn’t you love to be able to machine quilt your larger projects, as well as the smaller ones? Well, now you can! Machine quilt smaller sections of the quilt, and then assemble the sections to make this beautiful lap-size quilt. Before you know it, you’ll be sailing through those unfinished projects!
LEFTOVERS WITH STYLE (Full day to 2 days) Intermediate & up - Bring your stack of “orphan” blocks, your scrap box, and some graph paper, and we’ll begin by drawing up a “map” of what’s needed to turn those poor little blocks into a quilt top. We guarantee that no two quilt tops will be alike at the conclusion of THIS fun class!
MICRO-CHICKENS (Half-day) Advanced Beginner - Here’s a quick, “handy” little project for pulling hot plates out of your microwave oven. They’re like eating peanuts; you won’t be able to make just one! Kits available.

MERRY'S SKILL LEVEL DEFINITIONS ......
Below you’ll find some definitions for skill levels as mentioned in my list of workshops. Please note that these are my definitions. Other peoples’ interpretations may vary.
ALL - just what it sounds like... everyone is welcome, including non-sewers!
BEGINNER - someone who is familiar with sewing on a sewing machine, but has never done any quilting projects.
ADVANCED BEGINNER - someone who is familiar with basic rotary cutting techniques and simple applique.
INTERMEDIATE - able to at least complete a wall hanging on their own; is comfortable using rotary cutting techniques, but can also use templates; has had some practice with applique methods; knows how to sew “set-in” seams, curved seams, and mitered corners.
ADVANCED - is ready for more challenging projects, which may include color and design, drafting original patterns, or being able to tackle a project based on an idea, rather than a specific process.
