As our pinasse motored through the Niger River, people of all ages rushed out to greet us. Judging from the tent-like house in the background, this dark-skinned young woman probably is Balla, term for the former slaves of the Tuareg people, essentially a mixture of different ethnic groups stripped of their identity.
