One of the first neighborhood children I met, this little
girl's smile never failed to warm my heart. Initially, she greeted me
with the generic term "toubab," which means white person. After
explaining that my name was Melissa, she quickly began calling me by my
proper name. Soon, all the children in "Diaper Alley" began
greeting me by name, even from a distance. When they got closer, the children
eagerly took turns shaking my hand with their small, dark grimy hands.
After a long day at school, having a fan club to greet me was a great
welcome. |
