indigo cloth

Indigo cloth is worn by many ethnic groups in Mali, including the Dogon and the Tuareg. Its dark blue color is derived from the dye of the indigo plant, whose derivatives are seen in the picture on the left. Dogon women wrap a length of the finished cloth around their waists as a serapé. With the increase of tourism, indigo cloth is being transformed into many other styles and forms.
