pottery village sign

From the moment we arrived in Ségou, several young men had been asking us if we wanted to take a boat to tour the pottery village of Kalabougou. Finally on the third day we accepted the offer. After a 40 minute boat ride, we arrived in the village. Still early in the morning, the women and children had already piled quite a few pots in the pinasses. With perfect posture and balance, they confidently carried the pots from the banks of the Niger to the boats in the shallow water. One woman carried three clay pots on her head and two in her right hand– while carrying a baby on her back! Even after we completed our tour of the village, the community still was loading the already full boats with the handmade pottery to be sold in Ségou.
