The granaries were a prominent part
of the Dogon villages. Some were amongst the small mud-brick houses, while
others seemed to grow right out of the steep escarpment. The granaries
are used for storing grains and other valuables. Many granaries were elevated
above the ground with stilts to keep varmints out. Some, like the granary
in the photo above had a ladder made from a notched tree branch to get
inside. Thatched roofs are also common sights. The carved windows such
as the granary in the photo on the left are highly sought after by collectors. |
