Baskets are extremely utilitarian for the Dogon and other
ethnic groups. In the left picture, a blind Dogon man prepares fibers
for a round basket. Above, a Dogon man in the village of Koundou trims
the sides of a square-bottomed basket with an all-purpose ax. Women load
such sturdy baskets with large amounts of firewood, millet, and goods
from the markets, carefully balancing the contents on their heads. |
