| As we traveled from Bamako
towards Ségou, the vegetation began to change. In Ségou and
areas of Mali to the north of Bamako, the drier climate lends itself to
more scrub brush and the magnificient tree called the baobab. Like an upended
tree whose roots are growing upward towards the sky, the baobab's intial
leafless appearance of being dead is deceptive. The bark of this massive
tree is stripped and made into rope. The fruit that hangs from the branches
is sweet and very seedy, with a texture that reminded me of cotton candy. |
