My Neighborhood

I live in the region of Belgrade called Senjak. Located south of the Sava River, the area is very hilly.

A rather affluent area, there are many embassies in the area, along with diplomatic residences. The International School of Belgrade, where I teach, has its lower campus less than seven minute's walk from my house. Senjak is especially pretty in winter.

Many of the homes are tall and narrow.

Around the corner is this futuristic house.

It contrasts sharply with the other buildings

in the area and reportedly cost millions to build.

January 2004

Looking out my bedroom window as I do every morning, I discovered that more snow had fallen overnight, adding to the beautiful snow of the previous day. This was Belgrade's first snow of the year. With temperatures right around freezing, the snow coated everything with a thick, dense blanket. Even the telephone wires and delicate branches were covered.

  campus trees
The snow below the tree-filled campus was just too inviting. Even the Upper School Students (grades 6-10) spent their time in between classes and at lunch making snowmen or throwing snowballs.

The second week of February we had a mixture of freezing fog and snow. The result was a spectacular winter wonderland.
