Na•ve Serbian Artwork
Naïve artwork from the Serbian village of Kovacica | ||||
Located about 50 km from Belgrade, the small town ov Kovacica is well known for its tradition of na•ve painting. It is also unique in that a large percentage of its inhabitants are of Slovak heritage. In 1939, two locals, Martin Paluska and Jan Sokol began painting. Around 10 years later, a few others joined them, all trying to represent their rural environment and Slovak culture. Although many of the original artists are now dead, others (including students of theirs) have continued the tradition, following in the styles of well-known na•ve painters such as Zuzana Chalupova. In October 2005, I visited the Galerija Naivne Utmetnosti. The paintings below represent a portion of the collection. Because there were no titles on the pieces, I have chosen to label the paintings by the artist and year as marked on the paintings. I find it interesting that most of the paintings are centered around the fall and winter seasons. For such an agricultural region, the harvest would have been of central importance. Once the harvest was completed, people likely had more time to paint and do other leisure activities. Also note the enlarged hands in some of the paintings, particularly those of M. Jonas. This likely emphasizes the hard physical work of farm life. In addition to a small collection of works for sale at the Galerija, paintings can be purchased at the private Gallery Babka, located next door. In the same complex, some painters have small workshops. With a bit more inquiry, you may also be able to find and visit the homes of some of the artists. |
