GAME 4: BIRTHDAY PRESENTS
GOALS: What Children Will Learn.
(a) Recognizing words that start with the same sound and first letter (This helps children understand letters and word sounds, which are important for being able to learn to read.); (b) Alphabet letters and their sounds: (c) Practicing writing and drawing
TIP: If children are not yet able to name all the letters, that's OK. Help them begin to learn by playing the game. |

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PLAYING THE GAME
(1) Tell the Story. "Let's pretend it is someone's birthday! Let's have a birthday party!"
(2) Getting Ready for the Birthday Party.
• Help children make a Happy Birthday card with the Birthday Persons name or initials.
• Show children Birthday Presents pictures (page 1 and page 2). Ask them to name each present. Help them group together Presents that begin with the same sound, and ask them to make that sound. (Example: Dog-Doll-Drum-Duck all start with the ‘Duh’ sound of the letter ‘D.’)
• In the four empty Present boxes, write the names of four Presents that start with another first letter. Ask children to draw those Presents in the boxes. (Example: Car, Candy, Cookie and Crayon.)
(3) Children Drive Magic Story Cars to Birthday Party. Help Children Say the Letter ‘B’ (for Birthday) and point to it on the Letters Page to start their engines.
(4) Start the Party. Sing the Happy Birthday Song. Serve the Make-Believe Birthday Cake. Ask children to count the candles, blow them out, and share the cake.
(5) Children Give Presents. Tell children: “The Birthday Person does not know any letters yet. Let's help. Let's give presents that start with the same letter and sound. And let's tell the Birthday Person the name of that letter.” Help children take turns giving presents that start with the same first letter. (Example: “My presents are a Ball, Bat, Balloon and Book. They all start with the letter B.”)
(6) End the Party. After children give all the Presents they say “Happy Birthday” again, then drive home in their Magic Story Cars.
