INSTRUCTIONS FOR PLAYING THE GAME
(1) Practice Rhymes with Children. Talk about rhymes, words that end with the same sound. Say a word that is easy to rhyme. Roll a ball to a child who says a word that rhymes with it, then rolls the ball to another child who says another rhyming word. (Example: King-Ring-String-Swing-Thing.) Practice other rhyming words, and give hints when needed.
(2) Tell the Story. Let's drive our Magic Story Cars to the Rhyme Store, a special store that only sells things that rhyme.
(3) Drive Magic Story Cars to the Rhyme Store. Help children say the Letter ‘R’ (for Rhyme) and point to it on the Letters Page to start their engines and drive to the Rhyme Store.
(4) Cashier (You) Opens the Rhyme Store. Turn the sign to OPEN, and greet children with a rhyme, such as: “Come to the Rhyme Store anytime, here's where you buy things that rhyme!”
(5) Children Make Rhymes to Buy Animals at a Discount. Cashier (you) says: “The Rhyme Store has a sale on toy animals. Each animal costs $4. But you can buy each animal for $1 if you can say three words that rhyme with it.”
• Show a child a picture of one of the animals (cat or bat, bear, snake, goat, bee, whale or snail). Ask the child to name it. Show two other Items to Buy that rhyme with that animal. Ask the child to name the two other pictures aloud. (Example: Chair and Pear rhyme with Bear.)
• Help the child say one more word that rhymes with all three pictures. (Example: Other words that rhyme with Bear-Chair-Pear include Hair, Stair, Square or There). Child says another rhyming word and buys that animal and the two other items with one Pretend Dollar. Say “Thank you” and “You're welcome.” Children take turns, until they buy all the animals.
(6) Cashier (You) Closes the Rhyme Store. Turn the sign to CLOSED.
(7) Children Drive Home with their Toy Animals.
