GOALS: What Children Will Learn
• Practicing letters
• Identifying colors, shapes and sizes
TIP: If you are playing Circle of Make-Believe with only one child, this can be a particularly good game to play.

Make a Story Game from Circle of Make-Believe video.
1. WHAT YOU NEED
"MATERIALS" FROM THIS WEB SITE:
Letters
FROM YOUR HOME OR SCHOOL:
• A variety of toys or stuffed animals, kitchen or household items
• Bag, box, or pillow case
2. BEFORE YOU PLAY
• Make a “Stories Bag” (or “Stories Box”). Fill a bag, box, or pillow case with an assortment of different objects -- toys, clothing items, food items, colorful pieces of cloth or ribbons -- anything you want.
3. INSTRUCTIONS FOR PLAYING THE GAME

TELL THE STORY:
Show children the “Stories Bag” (or “Stories Box”). Tell them everything in the bag has its own special make-believe story. Ask children: “Can you take something out of the box (or bag) and tell me its special story?”

PLAY THE GAME:

  1. Take an Item: Ask children to take turns counting “1, 2, 3,” then pulling an item out of the box or bag.
  2. Say its First Letter: Ask the child to say the first letter of the item's name (such as “D” is for “Doll”). Show the child the Letters. Help him/her point to the first letter and make the sound of that letter. TIP: Some children might not know alphabet letters yet. Use the game to help them start to recognize letters and their sounds.
  3. Describe the Item: Ask the child to use words to describe the item's color, shape, size (big or little) and texture (how it feels).
  4. Tell its Story: Ask the child to make-up a pretend story about that item (such as “Once upon a time, a little girl doll…”). Encourage the child to be creative, using words, sounds and movements to have fun telling as detailed a story as possible. TIP: Older children may describe the items more fully. Younger children may be able to only name the object.
