door options for Ikea cabinets* Posted by: snookums on Tue, Jun 15, 04 at

Here are some door companies: Rockler Northwoods Doors Columbia Cabinet Doors (however they are not taking any new orders, don't know if they will in the future) Maplecraft USA Tape-Ease Wood Cabinet Doors Aarons/Randy Howse (we are ordering from this company) Cabinetmart Sierra I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that I checked out. I got quotes from Randy Howse and Maplecraft. ------------- * Posted by: gill_MD on Tue, Jun 15, 04 at 22:54 I looked into using Scherr's doors on Ikea cabinets. I think its quite feasible, but in the end we decided to go with Scherr's cabinets as well and get a custom fit. Their cabinets also have a few details like hickory veneer edge banding that we liked. The sample door we got (natural hickory) is really beautiful, and the selection of doors and door styles is huge - I found it hard to choose amongst the selection. I think they could make anything you want, even if its not in their price list. The prices for doors alone are quite reasonable - solid hickory shaker-style doors for our 12x9' kitchen are $1270. The bad news about Scherr's is that after the article in Fine Homebuilding their waiting list shot up to over 12 weeks. Not a problem for me, but maybe you don't want to wait that long after what you've been through already. One option would be to get an Ikea kitchen with the cheapest doors - scarcely more than the cabinets alone - while you are waiting for the doors from Scherr's. That would also mean you could measure the actual doors on the cabinets to make sure that they are right. ----------- * Posted by: gill_MD on Wed, Jun 16, 04 at 23:39 The cost of our kitchen from Scherrs is $6747 + shipping estimated at $635 (for an estimated shipping weight of 2700 lbs - the weight was the number that gave me the real shock!). This is for 9 wall, 6 base and 1 pantry cabinet. I didn't think this was too bad for a fully custom kitchen, certainly worth assembling ourselves to save a bit of money. I don't have the cost of finishing the doors alone - its rolled in with the drawers and cabinet parts - I guess that means end panels, veneer edging etc. The cost is roughly twice that of Ikea, and most of the cost difference is in the cabinet boxes and contents (Lazy susan, spice racks etc.). I don't think the cost of the doors is too different for similar doors, depending a bit on what exactly you choose - I'm comparing with Adel Birch. The cheapest Ikea doors are only about $10 each. Randy Howse does look cheaper. So using custom doors on Ikea cabinets could give you a 'high-end' look for not much more than the cost of Ikea cabinets ------ * Posted by: elsieCat on Thu, Jun 17, 04 at 1:23 Great, gill...I've been in touch with Leon (at Scherr's) again and I have to say he's very personable even by e-mail...it's so refreshing to have someone return e-mails within *minutes*! I'm sending him the specs of the Ikea cabs and he'll work up a quote with different kinds of wood veneer. WOW, 16 cabinets are 2700 pounds! ---------- * Posted by: heatherk9 on Sun, Jun 20, 04 at 22:59 Regarding Ikea pricing-- I made a trip to Ikea in Burbank and priced each cabinet I want in my kitchen with NO door, but with drawers, shelves, hinges, etc, and I compared that to the price of the same cabinets with the Arlig doors. Each Arlig drawer front or door only adds betewwn $2 and $10 to the price of the cabinet. I am going to order Ikea with Arlig, and then upgrade to custom doors. ------ I took a brief look at Scherr's (style 400 doors here ) and the Style 412 door would do, maybe also 415 (although not reallly sure what that would look like in big expanse).
