Shelves above Interior Wall Sink

Our old sink is, and our new sink
will be, on an interior wall. We currently have a 21" high two-door cabinet over
the sink. The bottom of the cabinet is 27" above the countertop. In the remodel
we will replace the cabinet with a set of open shelves graduated in depth,
starting with a 4" deep shelf just 15" above the countertop. The next shelf up
will be 8" deep. The third, fourth and fifth shelves will be 12"
deep.
Some time ago I replaced the
single shelf in the existing 21" high cabinet with two shelves. The gain in
usable storage space for plates, bowls, cups and glasses was impressive. In the
new arrangement we will have five open shelves in a vertical space of 33". All
the better to show off our mix & match collection of plain white
china.
The 24" wide shelves will be
installed between a 27" wide two-door cabinet over the dishwasher on the left
and an 18" wide one-door cabinet over a stack of drawers on the right. Next on
the right comes the fridge with two 12" deep open shelves exactly in line with
the top two shelves over the sink.
The
two cabinets will be 33" high, installed 15" above the countertops. The top of
the sink will be 1/2" to 3/4" above the top of the countertops. The bottom two
shelves over the sink will be reduced in depth to give the person at the sink
some room to work.
