nice modest backsplashes

Nice modest backsplash here. I like the subtle change to mosaic stone behind the cooktop.

LIke this one too - although I don't really like subway tile. Wonder what this would look like with 'normal' square tiles.

and another (again w/ subway tiles - will i be forced to surrender??)

yes! one i like without subways! (yahoo - flowergardengeo - earliest pictures in gallery)

nice tiles

Like the backsplash here (Paloma's page on webshots). In case the link goes wonky, here is her description: "Backsplash ceramic tiles are Italian imports. The brand is Pastorelli and the line is called Cave del Panaro. I used the lighter color as a field with some light color decos here and there and the green decos over the stove and in the desk area. It doesn't show up but the decos have an irridescent (sp?) wash over the leaves. I knew I found my backsplash the moment I saw them."

Art Tiles minimized

Motawi tiles are expensive. Take a look at the Pratt & Larsen backsplash in BH&G Spring 1998 ("For the Fun of It" article). They used a 'stripe' around the kitchen, mixing a field tile with a relief, and bordered with one of those narrow ones. They had another narrow one along the top of counter.

cool river pebble tiles

I think these are glass tiles, in a "river pebble" style, and wow! they are gorgeous! A lot of work to install, though, apparently (hard to do the grout b/c of the roundedness).
[If the individual photo link doesn't work, go to the album and start at photo 10 to see the tile work]

Details on difficulties:
.I had to pull the tiles off the mesh to do the border, so each one was put on one by one. Getting the corners neat was difficult on the sink splashback. Also in the UK most adhesive is beigey-grey, but the grout is white - I had problems with the grout showing through, then when I had finished, I found out you could get white mosaic adhesive...grrr...

I wouldn't worry about the tiles pulling away from the adhesive - tile adhesive has a very strong "grab" factor, they will however slip down if you don't have anything supporting them underneath, but if you're tiling on the edge of a countertop you should be fine.

And it was difficult to get the grout neat and even round the pebbles.Whereas on rectangular tiles you can just use a grout tool to zip up and down, with the pebbles you need to use a fine grain sponge to smooth the grout round the tiles. I found that the grout would overlap the edges of the tiles leaving an undefined edge - I ended up cleaning the grout off (when dry) with a plastic pan scourer.

cobalt blue accents

* Posted by: doghappy23 (My Page) on Thu, May 20, 04 at 21:27

Sorry....I couldn't help but post a picture of our newly done backsplash. It was just completed yesterday, and we absolutely love it! Pardon that the range isn't in yet. (tomorrow) [Here is the album in case photo links don't work] [Here is the photo]

We wanted cobalt blue glass, but didn't want to overdo it. We used LB glass bars as an accent all the way around the backsplash, and behind the range are the glass bars and the coordinating glass tiles by LB set in pewter squares.

The counters are volga blue granite, and the tile (that isn't glass) is a natural marble. 4 x 4

I think the backsplash decision was one of the most difficult, yet fun decisions, and it really ties your kitchen together. It almost feels like you can bring out your personality. Good Luck!

Recycled Glass Tile

Consider recycled glass tile for a backsplash. Read advantages here. Visit web sites of:
• Sandhill Industries (ooh, I like their idea in Board 14 )
Bedrock Industries
Oceanside Glass Tile
* www.hakatai.com (lower prices, perhaps)
