Day 9 ~ September 6, 2002

Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia

The Manse

We arose around 8:00 AM and were surprised to find the open beam loft ceiling adorned with sails fluttering in the breeze of the ceiling fan. We missed that feature last night. Our nook is in the top of an outbuilding from the main house and is an open beam construction, cozy bedroom/sitting room/bath room.

We walked over to the "big house" for conversation and good food. The main house is on a hill overlooking the bay and The Three Churches. Allan likes to "burst into the breakfast room and announce the special interest features for the day. The "must do" for this day was the local farmer's market next to the harbor.

We walked the town and checked out the art and gifts. I liked the frames, cabinets, pewter, pottery, folk art prints and turned burl bowls.

The sun was very bright today, and I am starting to notice that the light is different here. In the morning and afternoon, the light is strong and makes everything look very crisp and the colors very saturated. I talked at length with the folks at the farmer's market, especially the organic folks who have farms in the surrounding communities. I also bought some frames made from driftwood and got the name and address of the local artisan who makes them. We ate at Jo Anns, which is a riot of a fresh market.

Mary and I separated for a while - she to write in her journal and me off to rent some bikes at nearby Blue Rocks community. We took a 3 hour bike ride around the bay out towards Indian Point. On our trip, I found the man who makes the frames and curio cabinets from found wood. We visited and I arranged to buy more of his stock for my shop. I love finding the special people who make these treasures!

At the top of a bluff, Mary spotted some type of whale in the big water feeding Mahone Bay. We watched for about 1 hour. Afterwards we biked back and dressed for dinner at Mimi's Ocean Grill. Very nice place with a view of the water and a great garden (everybody loves their gardens here!) we are tiring of seafood and treated ourselves to a steak dinner. And of course, special desert.

It was dark after dinner and we drove outside of town where there were no lights burning, got out of the car and just marveled at the number and intensity of the stars. No wonder the ancients were able to make so many creative constellations out of the night sky!

Good Nite!
