McIvor Log Homes initially focused on the custom home market in Whistler, British Columbia - the world class destination ski resort where MLH is based. In 1985, we were invited into the Japanese marketplace and have built some truly spectacular buildings over the years including a restaurant on the shores of Lake Chuzenji, a hotel project for Mitsui Corp, a restaurant for Tobu, a company retreat for Yuasa Trading, Ltd., and a company lodge for the Nagoya Bank, as well as numerous single family residences. We extended our market to Hokkaido, where we have built some lodges and a beautiful log pyramid.
Simultaneously, we have continued as a leader in custom architecturally designed recreational homes in Whistler. We are also active in Colorado, Washington, Alaska and Eastern Canada.
The Western Red Cedar logs we use come into our yard by logging trucks from the local rain forest mountains so they are particularly tall and straight with natural resistance to decay. A natural fungicidal extractive (thujic acid) within cedar protects against decay and insect molestation. Western Red Cedar is the lightest commercial softwood, has fine grain, is free from pitch (sap), and has as exceptional trouble-free finish even after years of wear and exposure. It has a very low shrinkage factor and outstanding resistance to warping, twisting and checking. Because of its low density, it has excellent dimensional stability. The logs are peeled by hand so as not to disturb the natural shape and beauty and to leave the wood tubules intact for greater ability to insulate.
The logwork portion of the building is erected at our sites, then labeled and taken apart for shipping. Our staff are willing to travel to the building site to supervise the reconstruction of the building onto the foundation on the site which, depending on the complexity of the design, takes 6 hours to 4+ days.
MLH specializes in high quality Canadian cedar log buildings. We are experienced at complex roof systems and complicated building designs. We offer idea plans as well, that are suited to the recreational market.
Our fully computerized office systems enable up-to-date analysis and computer assisted design, We can build a simple logwork package in as little as two weeks or it can take many months to build a complex lodge.
In addition to logwork packages we can also supply a variety of high quality B.C. building materials. We handle complementary cedar products such as cedar decking, cedar shakes and red or yellow cedar windows and doors. We can supply flooring, carpets, ceramic tile, pine furniture, curtains, blinds, framing materials and whatever other building materials are needed to create a totally dream Log Home.
