I created the predecessor of this page in June 1996. It was
substantially reconfigured in fall 1997 as part of David K. Jordan's class ANGR 250:
Anthropology and the Web, and it has undergone further changes as my
interests have shifted from issues of urbanization and stress
in South Asia to problems of social change, depression, alcoholism, sexuality, and identity in
Central
Europe. (I'm still interested in eating disorders and obesity, but not doing research on them at present, and I'm also always happy to talk about language/linguistics or religion.)
My dissertation
examined alcoholism
and depression in
the post-communist Czech Republic, where I lived from July 1999 through
November 2002, and again for two months each of medical school in spring
2005 and additional fieldwork in summer 2006.
I received my PhD in psychological anthropology in 2003 and my MD in 2005, both from UCSD. From July 2005-June 2007, I was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago, working through data from my dissertation and learning new research and analytical methods. Since June 2007, I have been a resident physician in the research track in psychiatry at UCLA - Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior.
This an indexical guide to my pages, and to
academic resources related to mental health, behavioral medicine,
anthropology, and Czech/Slovak/Central European studies.
Due to the insidious phenomenon of link-rot, some linked
sites not under my control will change or disappear periodically. Sic transit gloria mundi. When this site began, jumpsites collecting and organizing links related to particular themes and interests were very useful, because in those pre-Google days most of the search engines were not. Consequently I have been downsizing the more general-interest sections of this site, as a Google or Wikipedia search can address many of those questions more efficiently.
I hope it will be useful or
entertaining for you. Please feel free to let me know if links are
broken or if you have suggestions for items to add.
