elastic future
elastic future is an experimental multi-disciplinary arts group working in theatre, film / video, and other live performance.  We perform original scripts, re-imaginings of existing works, and process-generated collaborations.

Our work is meant to be at once engaging and challenging.  We believe new ideas and unexpected choices are a better introduction to art than old standards and traditional forms.  elastic future lures people into the world of non-traditional art by providing a venue for artistic challenge that they can be a part of.

Our work is for our audience.  They’re not here for us, they’re here with us.

elastic future was founded on the heels of HEAVY DAYS, a collaborative theatre piece performed as part of the Shotgun Players Lab series.  Several of the artists involved in elastic future also studied theatre together at Princeton University.

Since our founding in 2004, we’ve created four original productions.  We also hold weekly workshops for our company members and additional artists.  In our workshops, we explore different processes of creating theatre, workshop new plays, and generally allow our members to exercise their theatrical and creative muscles.

production history

elastic future was founded in 2004, on the heels of HEAVY DAYS, a collaborative theatre piece performed as part of the Shotgun Players Lab series in Berkeley.  Our first original play, ABDUCTED, was performed at the Off-Market Café as part of the 2004 San Francisco Fringe Festival.  Probing issues of gender and sexuality, liberation and power, ABDUCTED is a radical re-imagining of the classic alien story.

In March of 2005, we moved to Cellspace for BEAUTIFUL, our first “Theatre Party.” Featuring drag queens, a live DJ, tons of free wine and an audience wide sing-a-long of the Divinyls “I Touch Myself” BEAUTIFUL is environmental, deconstructionist art with cross dressing, cartoonishly evil villains, and a lot of leg.

In April of 2006 we mounted the hybrid rock concert/play, THE UNAUTHORIZED AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF KIM DEAL, performed to sold out crowds at Amnesia. Wildly inaccurate, packed beyond reason, hot, sweaty and incredibly loud, KIM DEAL was a surprisingly fitting tribute to an artistic hero of ours.  This show was fueled by the incredible musical performance of members of the popular band Simon Stinger playing live Pixies and Breeders covers and it attracted fans from across the state including one of the Breeders herself.

Our most recent Theatre Party was performed in January of 2007.  THE GREEK PLAY, a co-production with the Mission art gallery Root Division, integrated our live performance with visual art from artists nationwide. A radical re-writing of ancient Greek tragedy, THE GREEK PLAY recreated the community experience and ritual of ancient theatre traditions.  Reclining on cushions in the darkness, surrounded by art and artifacts, our audience drank wine while Apollo and Athena appeared in wings and masks.

Beyond our main theatre work, we produced an interactive theatre installation called JAMES AT THE ALTAR, the short film JOINERS inspired by the art of David Hockney, and Suzan-Lori Park’s 365 Plays/365 Days.
