The Patriot's Pen Essay Writing Contest, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, offers selected students the opportunity to express their views in writing on patriotic themes. Local winners move on to the district, state, and national competitions.

The Anthology of Poetry Writing Contests offers selected students the opportunity to have their poetry published in a nationally recognized anthology of middle school poetry.

Both contests will be introduced to the students at the end of the first marking period and will have due dates in November.

All students on Team 7-0 will be offered an opportunity to address the challenges and problems that exist in society by participating in the Adopt-a-Cause Unit. During the month of January, students will examine the world in which they live, not as uncaring, disinterested observers, but as passionate and responsible citizens who recognize the worth of every living creature and the need for social, political, and environmental awareness. Emphasis will be placed on the development of skills and techniques related to research, persuasive writing and speaking, and critical listening. These skills and techniques will be introduced in English class and reinforced in all major subject areas.
