Seventh grade English integrates reading, literature study, writing, researching, speaking, and thinking skills. Literature is studied arranged by theme, often integrated with other subjects. Students write often in narrative, informative, and persuasive modes. Specific assignments include personal narratives, compare-contrast papers, persuasive letters, literary analysis, and a dramatic scene. Students also participate in writing workshops using self-selected writing topics. Language study is integrated with reading and writing, and oral communications skills are taught and applied in context, with students giving informative speeches. Students learn the basics of research and support a topic with information from several sources. Honors-level English includes the same thematic literary units and composition units as standard level, but the course of study includes variations in materials, assignments, expectations, and assessments. Additional, more challenging literature is included, with novels selected for interdisciplinary team units. Writing extends to editorials, literary analysis, and extended narrative and informative pieces. |
