A Democratic Plan

One Democrat, Rep. Robert Wexler from Florida, has broken ranks with his party and actually offered an alternative to Bush's Social Security proposal. Of course I don't agree with his plan of raising withholding taxes, but he gets kudos for actually saying what he believes. The Democratic leadership is angry. They know that saying what they believe isn't politically viable. They could now be forced to defend what they believe rather than simply criticizing any Bush proposal. I say bring on the debates:

"Republicans have urged Democrats repeatedly to offer plans of their own, instead of just criticizing President Bush's ideas, so they were encouraged by Mr. Wexler's move. But it didn't make Democratic leaders happy."
