there never was a beautiful poet.
While I'd rather be back in IL, being in Nashville
has some rewards. I've been bumping into other producers and I'm pleased to
report that most of them are pretty down to earth. Dan Mukala (Backstreet boys,
Nick Lachey) traded gear tips with me, Drew Ramsey (Marc Broussard, Johnny Lang,
India Arie) showed me his amazing landscaping prowess and gave me tips on my
scorched earth lawn. I've only met Chris Stevens (toby mac) and Matt Bronlewee
(Plumb, Natalie Imbruglia, Jars of Clay) once but they both seem like nice guys.
Last week Robert Marvin, Josiah Bell, Reid, Shaun and I all made a trip to the
mall for some leather cons. It was like the good parts of college. I'm a fan
of Robert Marvin for his work with Matt Kearney among others and I told him so
when I met him. He responded with "I'm a fan of yours too". It kind of blew my
mind. It may be that we all suffer from that feeling that everyone belongs to
the party but us.
I've enjoyed hanging
out with all these guys so much that I'm contemplating organizing some kind of
regular event or fish fry. I wouldn't have thought that you could gather this
much talent in one room and not have ego clashes, but it really seems like
everyone is real enough that we could probably play ultimate frisbee together.
Or at least watch movies in the Georgetown Masters basement theater. I was
lamenting to a friend that we all needed a way to exercise regularly (it's
called studio belly) and I said
"well
it's a bunch of producers so it won't be soccer.. maybe ultimate
frisbee"
And that my friends is the
point. Most of the people I've met in the music biz were not captains of the
football team. I certainly wasn't popular. Dave is a wicked guitar player
because every night in high school when everyone else was out partying he was at
home, practicing guitar with a bird perched on his shoulder. It reminds me of
the quote: "there never was a beautiful poet" because when you're not beautiful
you are drawn to create beauty. All of us who didn't fit in easily had to find
other ways to belong. And a lot of those people went on to excel at what they
did.
So if you're not fitting in so well
in high school, take heart. Take up your guitars, your computers, your
skateboards, your passions and prepare for the many chances that will come to
you in life. There is a big wide world and life after high
school.
and if you're the kind of person
who makes fun of late bloomers, just remember, you might be mocking the future
Bill Gates. ;)
UPDATE: Steve Irwin died
filming a segment for crocodile hunter, he was stung through the heart by a
sting ray. Alas, Steve we'll miss you.
