Reasons why I hate writing music.
Here's a peek at my inner critic that sits on my
shoulder when I write music.
1. I
shouldn't write because everything I do is
derivative.
2. I shouldn't write because
compared to all the bands I like, I write like
crap.
3. I shouldn't write because I have no
right to, I shouldn't presume to be an
artist.
4. I shouldn't write because I am too
old and not understanding music that's popular
now.
5. I shouldn't write because I am a crap
writer and moving too slow, everyone writes faster than
me.
6. I shouldn't write because I don't
understand why Karaoke Superstars sold more than Last one picked and no one will
like this next album.
7. I shouldn't write
because I am the least talented musician in my
band
So of course the burden of art, is
bulling your way through the inner critic and finding the courage to get in the
chair and put your ideas down on paper. Sometimes, it can be paralyzing, every
day is an act of will over feeling. Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes, the
bear gets you.
