Music Video - Day 1

Well, we're finally shooting a music video.

I actually have a background in video/film which is ironically why we haven't shot a lot of videos, I just couldn't bring myself to do a cheap video. We never had much of a budget for videos in the past so all my ideas got shelved quietly. I tend to be a very visual thinker so I know a song is working when I can start to see the video in my head as I listen to the song. Sometimes we run movies with the sound off while we're writing to help get us out of a rut. Anyways, now we've got a nice budget from Sony and we're going to a music video for we live. at last.

Sadly I don't get to direct and this isn't one of my ideas, but hey, they're working hard on making us a video.

I thought I'd document the process for you here, so you could walk with us through the making of a music video. These pictures actually aren't really from day 1. Day 1 started weeks ago when I wrote up a treatment and it was sent to sony who sent it to a bunch of directors along with the song. Sony then sent me a bunch of reels of directors they liked and asked the directors to submit either their own treatments or a treatment based on my idea. We spent a couple weeks sifting through reels and submitted treatments. I could show you pictures of me watching 100 music videos in a row but it's not very visually interesting.

After a lot of sifting, Piero the music video guru at sony got us pointed towards a director and a treatment. That resulted in a lot of phone conferencing to refine the ideas in the treatment.

So here we are. In these pictures, it's the first time we've all gotten together in one room. That's Superchick, our manager; Jim Scherer, Piero, the director Antti and the stylists: Paula and Matt. Mostly what we're doing is planning. All the pictures spread out on the table are called "tear sheets" and they're just pictures from magazines that Paula and Matt ripped out for ideas. A lot of money get's spent in the couple days of shooting and so a lot of planning goes into it to make sure that you don't miss anything on the shooting day. If you have to go back it's very expensive. We'll be shooting the video in los angeles, so all of my L.A. area friends, hit me with an e-mail if you have time to come down and be in the video.
