Pictures of Rabbit Teeth
Pictures of Rabbit Teeth (in Japanese)

    Figure Captions

(Comments by Mr. Akutagawa, translated into English)

  • Figure 1: The whole skull.

  • Figure 2: Peg teeth, by which rabbits are differentiated from rodents.

  • Figure 3: Left: Upper Jaw, and Right: Lower Jaw. Please note the difference in the width of the molars.

  • Figure 4: Let's have a close look at the molars.

  • Figure 5: The upper molars consist of six teeth (in this photo, the most proximal one is lost, and the most distal one is hidden behind the other teeth); the lower, five.

  • Figure 6: The surface looks like a wash board or saw, but the indented parts are nicely fit between the upper and lower molars.

  • Figure 7: The width of the surface of mastication is different between the upper and lower molars, and the upper molars protrude to the outer sides.

  • Figure 8: Thus, we can understand that bunnies chew plants by moving the molars sideways at large amplitude. (Pellets do not induce this movement, and hay is essential to wear down molars properly.)
