Bunny Bun's Spay - Uterine Cancer

I know that having a bunny spayed is a difficult decision for all of us to make. I did not think it was necessary because I had 2 female bunnies several years ago, no males. But when I subscribed to the PETBUNNY e-mail list, I heard about the high risk of cancer and, fortunately, had the procedure done.

When the vet spayed my Bunny Bun, she found suspicious growths in her uterus, extending to one mammary gland. The vet removed ALL the suspicious tissue (plus a bit extra, including half the cervix, to be safe), performed reconstructive surgery, then sent the tissue away for a biopsy.

The vet made us stay with Bunny Bun and Benny in the clinic for an hour after the surgery for observation. We were holding each of them in a towel close to our bodies to keep them warm. They started eating carrot tops before we left the clinic, so we knew their recovery had begun.

It turned out that Bunny Bun had cancer in her uterus and ovaries and it was starting to spread into one mammary gland. She was only 2 years old! The vet told us Bunny Bun would have started showing cancer symptoms 6 months later but, by then, it would have been too late to save her.

If I hadn't spayed her, she would have died a horrible death in few months. After her spay, she lived many happy years.

Lab Report: Biopsy -- Final diagnosis:

TUMOR, UTERUS, ADENOCARCINOMA

MAMMARY GLAND, FIBROCYSTIC HYPERPLASIA

SECTIONS OF UTERUS AND SKIN ARE EXAMINED. THE SKIN CONTAINS MAMMARY GLAND. THE UTERUS HAS BEEN LARGELY REPLACED BY A TUMOR COMPOSED OF NUMEROUS DUCTS LINED BY ATYPICAL EPITHELIUM. UTERINE ADENOCARCINOMAS ARE EXTREMELY COMMON IN NEW ZEALAND WHITE RABBITS. THE MAMMARY TISSUE IS CHARACTERIZED BY NUMEROUS CYSTIC GLANDS AND DUCTS WITH PROMINENT STROMA. THIS MOST LIKELY IS FIBROADEMATOUS HYPERPLASIA RELATED TO ENDOCRINE/OVARIAN DYSFUNCTION. OVARIOHYSTERECTOMY IS THE TREATMENT OF CHOICE FOR BOTH LESIONS. Pathologist: A.J.H., DVM
