World Cup

We are in the "Group of Death".  It was bound to happen.  We have been avoiding that group every draw.  Every time this draw happens you get a group that is just stacked. Well, this year we go stuck in it. Below is a what you might call a briefing on the Cup or just some of my ranting. I am not sure which it is, probably ranting.

This is going to be maybe the best Cup ever. I know most of you are bored by soccer (futbol) or just think it sucks. Just watch some on these games in June of 06, watch the fans, the players, the emotion. The entire world we will be watching, and for a good reason, great sport and the ability to be called the REAL WORLD CHAMPIONS. 500+ million watching for the final, maybe you can be 501 million if you just open you mind to things we (USA) are not he best at. Of course this is not meant for current fans. Rock on.

QUICK FACT on the Group of Death (E)
That difficulty is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that the United States have never beaten any of the three teams they have been drawn with. Furthermore, it is the only group at Germany 2006 with three contenders in the top 12 of the FIFA/Coca-Cola world ranking. (thanks to the official World Cup site)

If we are to advance we need at least 2 wins.  I think we can beat Italy and Ghana.  The Czech's are playing incredible football right now.  The led the European qualifying in goals scored.  They have people with rockets for legs.  See what freedom does for a county?  They make great beer and play good futbol.

Some of the other groups are just average at best.  If we could have made it past group in e in out drawing and of the last three we would have gone to are better than what we got.  I mean look at group G and H.....

G (Group of Shit)
France (players are too old)
Switzerland (they make watches)
South Korea (Getting better but they still eat dogs.  I don't like that.)
Togo (Please tell me where Togo is and name a player or citizen, anyone?)

I still say this team will make some noise.  Hell, if not for a handball by Germany we would have made the semis in '02.  But that is how the game goes.

This USA team is made of guys who know what to do to win.  We don't have many or any world stars.  These guys now what their role is on the field, they are learning not to press to hard in certain situations.  I see the world game in their play over the past several years.  They are learning and have a abundance of talent to pick from after watching the NCAA soccer final four today.

I mean, people know who Landon Donavan is but he left Germany cause he was homesick.  The German media and fans ate this up.  Will this effect him in Germany next summer?  After he got over that case of home sickness he has put together an incredible year.  He lead the Galaxy to the first ever double of winning the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and the MLs title.  Get this, the MLS is ranked as a decent league in the world. I am not saying we are even close to any European league but they are starting to take notice. Wow, what a difference 10 years and tons of local US talent can do.

Everywhere you look they are playing.  You can't hide from it anymore.  350 million watched the drawing, only 3 million watch the NCAA selection show, and the super bowl doesn't even get that many.

A little commentary from a college football fan...

This is quoted from a college football message board. As you may know I feel the same way as this person does.

More ND questions...

"After last nights game with Stanford where ND barely beat a 5-5 (now 5-6) team full of injuries, I decided to review their season's body of work.

After 11 games, where they were 9-2...
+ They played only 3 bowl eligible teams (yes, only 3 teams with winning records)
+ The 3 bowl eligible teams consist of:
1. Michigan, a win. But in that game Michigan was fairly depleted, with an ailing Hart (yes, the ND defense did knock him out), and I heard (correct me if I am wrong) Michigan was missing a few other key players.
2. USC, a loss. ND gave its best showing of the year nearly pulling the huge upset to the 2 time defending NC and current #1, but it was still a loss. Note that if ND and PSU had both gotten lucky breaks that day, PSU would also be playing for the National Championship this season for sure.
3. BYU, a win. BYU, yes BYU, was the other bowl eligible team. Hardly a powerhouse.

+ Their second loss came to Michigan State. A team that is 5-6 and NOT bowl eligible.

+ Granted, it is hard to punish a team because their opponents had such bad seasons. Especially considering, on paper, the season looked fairly tough to start the season.

+ However, why is it acceptable to REWARD a team for having a poor schedule?

PSU is still picked on for having a patsy non-conference schedule. However, 2 of the 3 "patsies" are bowl eligible, one of which would have been playing for a BCS game if not for blowing it against UConn yesterday. By the way, PSU played 7 bowl eligible teams, beating 6 of them. One of these teams has an outstanding chance of being a BCS team (we won that game).

I know I'm beating a dead horse and really have no point besides stating again how much it annoys me, but man, this annoys me."

Detroit Rock City!

Happy Day, Happy Day! In the immortal words of Derek and the Domino's, "It's got to get better in a little while." Well, the letter I got from the NFL this morning will help a little.

Quickie, since the Penn State game is on....

I was picked out of a lottery of a million or more to buy two tickets to the SUPERBOWL!!! I know you are saying, oh you have to buy them? Yes I do, but the resale value is about 2000 a ticket. I am only paying 400 a pop. Chew on that one. If the Eagles make it I will be rocking the Motor City. Anyone want the other ticket if the Birds make it? I am sure there has to be someone who wants to go. *wink*

Marcus Camby's demand for a clothing stipend so stupid it defies logic

So the NBA gave the players a very lose casual dress code. No biggie, we all have to do it for work. So Marcus Camby has asked the league for a stipend to buy his clothes. He is claiming that he owns nothing that will conform to the dress code. So let me get this straight, a man who makes over 8 million a year wants money to buy work clothes? That is one of the funnies things I have heard. It has to be up there with Latrell Sprewell saying he can't feed his family on his multi-million dollar salary. None of these guys have a sense of reality which I really find funny.

Penn State is Still Back Bitches

What a fucking day. I spend 6 hours flying from Seattle to Philadelphia wonder what is going on with my Nittany Lions. Thanks to my mom asking the stewart on the plan if he could get us updates on the game I was semi-clued in. As I am leaving the flight I have PSU down by 3 with the ball. I run to the nearest bar and catch the final 2 min. First thing I see is PSU scoring and taking the lead. The bar is going nuts, except for the Michigan guy in the corner. We all hold out breath for the final 50 some seconds plus 2, we will get to that later. Great kick return for Michigan to around the scUM 45. Not a good sign. As scUM tries to move the ball down field they toss a pass to the right side for first down, we think. Well, the zebra immediately calls the play in bounds and a first down. The first replay that ABC shows has him landing CLEARLY out of bounds. UM runs up to the ball and runs a play (kudos to the scUM staff for that move). My first question is I thought the Big Ten put in instant replay for this exact situation (see Tony Johnson a few years back at the crap house). It should not matter how quick they got back to the line and ran a play. ANY questionable call inside 2 minutes should a least be looked at. All the refs had to do was call an official timeout and walk of to the phone and check it out. As well all saw he was out of bounds. So, I am thinking about the bias toward UM, ugg. Then we have a good clean play with a time-out called by UM at the end. For some unknown reason to all of us and Joe Paterno (see his post game press conf) the zebras put 2 seconds back on the clock without any look at replay at all. The entire reason the time was but back on was Lloyd Carr having a fit on the sidelines. Please someone show me where those 2 seconds came from? He can't call the timeout before the play is over?!?!?! Ahh, the UM bias again. If Joe went nuts he would have been portrayed in the media as a cranky old man, but not Lloyd. To sum this up I am mad at the way we lost, not that we lost.

I never though we would go undefeated and win the NC but I will admit I was getting very excited about the thought. What this game proves is that we are back and can play with anybody at anytime. We were set up for a huge let down after the O$U game and it didn't happen. The media thought we were going to roll over and die, we didn't. Words cannot express how proud I am of this team. They let everything on the field today and will every time they take the field.

So, now tell me who thought we might go 10-1 or 9-2 or even 8-3? I think we really can get 10-1 or 9-2 out of the season and one hell of a nice bowl. Hell, go 10-1 and we are the BIG TEN CHAMPIONS! Let's look forward to Illinois and just forget that when we go to Michigan we are going to get screwed in some form. Did I mention that I heard the zebra walked a spot in from the sidelines crooked? Of course it was in UM favor. Someone explain this one to me I missed it. Even the announcers caught this one I was told. I am not mad we lost just how it happened.

As for the rankings. We will still be top 15 I would think. Look how many one loss team are in the top 15. You are damn straight that we are one of the best 1 loss teams in the county. Keep your head up and we can still end up in a BCS bowl. Just walk away from scUM before the zebras give us a second loss for saying they might be wrong. :)

Let's roll on Lions, we are back where we belong.

Money Talks and Good Beer Walks

The Cup is in Germany next year, and the story that hasn’t made a ripple on this side of the pond is the sponsorship agreements.
You go to a major sporting event in Germany and you expect to wolf down wurst — bockwurst, weisswurst, blutwurst, bratwurst, knockwurst — and wash it down with some of that good German beer. That’s what the Germans expected.
But they’ve been sorely disappointed.
The World Cup may be in Germany, but not the sponsors. The official car in the land famous for automotive engineering is Hyundai. The official food is McDonalds. The official soft drink is Coke.
And the official beer in the country that takes as much pride in its breweries as France does in its vineyards is Budweiser. This last is the ultimate triumph of money over principles. Bud offered $40 million, and suddenly tradition didn’t seem so important.
In Europe, fans are less than happy. In Germany, beer is made with barley; Budweiser is a rice beer. In Germany, beer also has robust taste, and Budweiser-style American lagers taste, to German palates, like distilled water, but without the kick.
Besides, there is already a beer called Budweiser in Europe. It’s made in the Czech Republic, home of some of the greatest lager beers in the world, including Pilsner Urquell, which some aficionados call the best pilsner of them all.

Bracket Busters!

For a while I thought the 2005 installment of the NCAA Madness was going to be ho-hum in terms of upsets. Was I wrong. First off, the Catamounts of Vermont take down the mighty Orangemen of Syracuse. I love seeing the Catamounts pull the upset but this one hurt me in the bracket big time. I had the 'Cuse going all the way to the final and winning it. I had a great start to my bracket but that really killed the mood in tournament central (aka the basement).
From the mean streets of Lewisburg!
Once me and the fellas got that one out of our system on come the Bison of Bucknell. Bucknell is about 50 miles from my home so of course of I have to root for them. At first look I did not give Bucknell a snowballs chance in hell against Kansas. Again, I was wrong. Do you see a theme here? Bucknell and it's cast of unknowns kept tossing in threes and running a near perfect offense all game. What a thrilling game, but again tossed my bracket into a tizzy. I am sure I am not the only one. I am sure the mean street of Lewisburg are rocking tonight like never before. FYI, Lewisburg is a very small town almost in the middle of Pennsyltucky.

Once again the NCAA basketball tourny has proved to be one of the greatest and most exciting sports events of the year.
