This workshop is a theoretical and practical study of contemporary dance partnering. We will identify fundamental principles that provide us with a shared vocabulary, facilitating communication and trust while minimizing confusion and the risk of injury. We will practice various partnering relationships, beginning with the simple and straight-forward and venturing into more unconventional and creative situations, including contact improvisation. We will address the aspects of a mind/body sensibility that allows us to anticipate partnering possibilities as they emerge from within our movement itself. A brief, guided warm-up will proceed each day’s session. However, I recommend that participants come early to warm up more thoroughly if they feel they need it.

Rick Merrill
Rick Merrill mistakenly lurched into dance by “messing around” with Pilobolus Dance Theater in its formative days at Dartmouth College. He then studied improvisation and mind/body awareness at Naropa University in Boulder Colorado. He went on to study and dance with many remarkable teachers and artists while living in New York City. Rick has choreographed for and performed with numerous incarnations of his own group, based first in NYC and later in Europe. He has taught in universities, experimental schools and festivals throughout the US and Europe. He currently teaches in the Dance Program at Western Washington University.
