Magic Wand

So I got to whip out the magic wand today. Hey now, get you mind out of the gutter! The magic wand is my pen, and it became my way of having some fun with people when I would fix some kind of computer issue. Today, at work, we had an issue with the program that we use to document what happened for the shift. Somehow last year's comments got erased.

Well, Uncle Marz had the solution. It just so happens that I'm one of a couple people that actually let the program do a backup of the notes every few days. So I was able to recover all of that data. Unfortunately, by doing that, I erased the past 2 weeks of data by accident. Ooops. Sorry.

You might think that was the end. Well, the wheels started turning and I realized that the program was running at that exact moment on someone else's computer. I exported their data to a file and figured I could import it to the copy I was using. Nope.....didn't work like I though it would.

After futzing around for a while I came up with the bright idea of recovering this stuff from the e-mails that are sent out everyday. I got all of it done, and now we are back to normal. Magic Wand time.

I kinda did it after the fact, but I'll take it.

No big deal right? Yeah, but I hadn't really needed to do the magic wand since leaving D&B. I used it there ALL the time. Go figure. It even irritated a few people there. Not necessarily in a bad way, but they knew it would come out sometimes when a particularly vexing problem would arise. I even had a POS (Piece of Shit) terminal come up just by waving it! At the exact moment! Really. OK so I fiddled around with the terminal first to fix the problem and unconsciously timed it just right. It looked cool.

Anyway, I was happy to be the computer geek at work today. It's what I do. Or, as the kids say, "that's how I roll." You know it, G. Geekster Marz up in da hizza! The real O.G. Original Geek. Don't mess with me. I'll put yo 'puter on lock down :)

OK, on a more serious note: Movie Theaters. Here's the headline:

Movie theaters may ask to jam cell phones.

Yep, that's right. There is such a huge problem with people talking on their cell phones during movies that it keeps other people away from the theater. It couldn't be things such as bad movies (Ultraviolet), high prices ($9.75), and other entertainment options (XBox, Cable TV, DVD's, etc.) I don't go to the movie theater that often, but I usually see 3-6 movies a year in one, and I have never seen anyone on their phone talking during the movie.

Well, I've seen someone get a call and do one of a couple things. 1. Look at the ID and let it go to voicemail. 2. Go ahead and answer it, tell the person to hold on, and then go outside the theater so as not to bother the other people.

Give me a break. they want to jam the signal. They didn't want to do that when everyone had pagers 20 years ago. Why with cell phones? How many people rely on that phone to make sure that they can be contacted during an emergency? A lot. It allows people to not be tied down to their land line at home. These guys just don't get it. The MPAA and theater owners are living in a bubble. You can add the RIAA to that too, but that is another whole story by itself!

And don't get me started on the DOJ wanting the search records from the search engines.

Judge to Order Google to Turn Over Records

Only Google has so far stood up to them. While the other companies (AOL, Yahoo!, and MSN) handed over the records, Google has so far said no. And those companies have assured us that the info did not contain any personal info, but that's next I can assure you. Anonymous browsing is the way to go. I don't need the feds prying into my stuff. I just might go back to using PGP for my e-mails again. I used to 10 years ago but stopped since other people weren't using it. I just might need to try to convince others to start.

If you haven't been able to tell, I'm a huge 1st Amendment and Personal Privacy kind of guy. Let the government get the warrants to do the surveillance, but don't tap into my phones, e-mails, and internet connections just because you feel like it. Have a damn good reason, like probable cause.

OK, I've digressed long enough. I could probably gone on for a while longer. And those are subjects for an entire beliefs section of the web site that I plan to do some day.
