Attendance
Attendance in class is mandatory and will count towards your class participation grade. If you are sick or are participating in a school-sponsored sporting event, please present me with documentation so that you do not get penalized for your absence. Make sure you also get notes from someone in class for the material you missed. Please note that your work or training schedule is not a legitmate reason for missing class.
You are expected to check your Mason email regularly, in case the university or your professors sends you an important announcement. I will, for my part, try to keep such notices to a minimum, but sometimes they are unavoidable. Also, when you email me, please use your Mason account, so that I can give your message higher priority.
My Mason username is mstonema, that is, my first initial and all but the last letter of my last name.
Late Work
It is better to turn in work late than not at all, but late work will be marked off by as much as five points per day. Please note, however, that no work be accepted after classes are over. The university does not allow instructors to submit grade changes for work submitted late.
Honor System and Plagiarism
Academic honesty is essential not only to the success of the course, but also to your academic and professional careers. Hence, I do not tolerate plagiarism or other academic dishonesty of any kind. I will report it when I see it. For further details, see the following links both on GMU's policy as well as information on what plagiarism is in the first place.
- GMU Honor System --- This link leads to the George Mason University Catalog
- George Mason University Honor System and Code --- This restatement of the same system includes information about what plagiarism is.
- Avoiding Plagiarism --- Resources at the Writing Center on how to avoid plagiarism. This information applies not only to papers, but also to any work you do online.
Some students resort to plagiarism when they find themselves overwhelmed with work. Before you resort to such a step, consider this:
- History professors spend a good portion of their lives with language. They can spot plagiarism quite easily.
- Plagiarism will lead to an "F" for the course and possibly a permanent mark in your records. It is better to submit your own work, no matter how imperfect, than to bring such consequences upon yourself.
Disabilities
If you have a disability or need an academic accommodation, please see me immediately and contact the Office of Disability Services in SUB 1, room 222. All academic accommodations must be arranged through this office. For more information, visit their website or call 703–993–2474.
